CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) for the Highland Lakes
Area, Inc.,
recruits, trains, and supervises
court-appointed volunteers to advocate for children who come into
the court system as a result of abuse and neglect.
These
volunteers, who serve as Guardian ad Litems, make recommendations to
the court, based on fact finding
and
investigation, to serve the best interest of the child once they
have been removed from their home
by the Texas
Department of Family and Protective Services
due to abuse and/or neglect .
Originally established on March 12, 1991 as CASA of Burnet County,
the organization began with one volunteer
whose voice made a positive
difference in the lives of two small children who had been removed
from their home due
to abuse and neglect.
Since that
time, the organization has grown to serve five counties – Blanco,
Burnet, Llano,
Lampasas,
and San Saba and over 1300 children. CASA
for the Highland Lakes Area has helped get children out of
foster
care in half the time it would ordinarily take — at a considerable
savings to taxpayers.
CASA staff and volunteers provide important services
both to children in
need and to local court systems. CASA provides
direct
services to child victims including: one-on-one contact; guidance;
criminal/civil court accompaniment and
representation; information & referral; follow-up services via phone
and face-to-face; transportation, medical, educational,
and
victim advocacy; and, assistance with Crime Victims Compensation
applications. CASA volunteers prepare reports
and
recommendations to the court based on investigational fact finding,
aid in seeking permanent placement options,
and help expedite case maintenance--all in the best interest of the
child.
CASA for the Highland Lakes
Area also conducts
community awareness projects to keep the public informed on child
abuse issues,
available community services, and
educational interests.
CASA for the Highland Lakes
Area is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization
governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. CASA
currently has nine staff and 72 active volunteers who proudly
advocate for 282 children.
